MCP connector

Get started with the NyayAssist MCP connector

Use NyayAssist legal research, drafting and matter work inside the AI apps you already use.

The NyayAssist connector links your NyayAssist account to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code and other apps that support the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Ask in plain language and the app uses NyayAssist to search judgments and Acts, research, draft and work on your matters.

What it is#

NyayAssist is a research and drafting platform for advocates practising Indian law. The connector is a secure bridge, hosted by NyayAssist, between your NyayAssist account and the AI app you already use. There is nothing to install or host: you add one web address to your app and sign in with your NyayAssist login.

Everything happens in your own NyayAssist account and follows your plan, exactly as in the NyayAssist web app. Work you create through the connector, such as a draft or a research answer, also appears in the web app.

Who it is for#

  • Advocates and law firms who want NyayAssist research and drafting in the same chat where they already think through a matter.
  • In-house legal teams who already use NyayAssist for research, drafting and due diligence.
  • Legal technologists who use coding assistants such as Cursor or VS Code and want NyayAssist tools alongside them.

You need a NyayAssist account. You can create one at nyayassist.ai.

Quick start in three steps#

  1. Copy the server address

    Server address: https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp

    This one address works for every NyayAssist plan.

  2. Add it to your AI app

    Add NyayAssist as a connector (Claude, ChatGPT) or MCP server (Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code). Step-by-step instructions for each app are below.

  3. Sign in and ask

    Your app opens the NyayAssist sign-in page. Sign in with the account you use on nyayassist.ai and approve access. Then ask, for example:

    Using NyayAssist, find Supreme Court judgments from the last five years on adverse possession and summarise the three most relevant.

Set up your app#

Choose your app for exact steps. Menu names in third-party apps can change between releases; if a label differs, look for the nearest equivalent.

Claude (web, desktop and mobile)

Works in Claude on the web, the Claude desktop app and the Claude mobile apps. A connector added on the web or desktop is also available on mobile.

  1. Open Settings → Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector.
  3. Enter a name, for example NyayAssist, and the server address:
    Server address: https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp
  4. Select Add, then Connect.
  5. Sign in on the NyayAssist page that opens, with the same account you use on nyayassist.ai, and approve access.

Leave the advanced OAuth client fields empty; Claude registers itself with NyayAssist automatically. When NyayAssist is listed in the Claude connector directory, you can add it from there instead of typing the address.

Claude Team and Enterprise plans

  1. Owner: add NyayAssist once as a custom connector in the organisation's connector settings, using the address above.
  2. Each member: open Settings → Connectors, find NyayAssist and select Connect, then sign in with their own NyayAssist account.

Every member sees only their own NyayAssist data; nothing is shared between members through the connector.

Using it

In a chat, open the tools menu in the message box and make sure NyayAssist is turned on. Claude asks for your approval before it uses a tool that creates something, depending on your Claude settings.

To disconnect, open Settings → Connectors, select NyayAssist and choose Disconnect. Your NyayAssist account and data are unchanged.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT adds your own connectors through developer mode, which is available on eligible ChatGPT plans. Menu names change between ChatGPT releases; if a label differs, look for the equivalent under Settings → Apps & Connectors.

  1. Open Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
  2. Back in Apps & Connectors, choose Create (or Add connector).
  3. Fill in:
    • Name: NyayAssist
    • Description: Indian legal research, drafting and matters
    • MCP server URL:
      Server address: https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp
    • Authentication: OAuth
  4. Confirm that you trust the application and select Create.
  5. Sign in on the NyayAssist page that opens and approve access.

On ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, an admin may need to allow custom connectors before members can add or use them.

Using it

Start a new chat, open the + menu, choose the developer mode or connector option and select NyayAssist. ChatGPT shows a confirmation before calling tools that create something; review it before approving.

To disconnect, open Settings → Apps & Connectors, select NyayAssist and disconnect or delete it.

Gemini CLI

Install the NyayAssist extension. It adds the NyayAssist server and three skills that help Gemini use the tools well.

Terminal
gemini extensions install https://github.com/NyayAssist/nyayassist-mcp

Restart Gemini CLI. The first time a NyayAssist tool is needed, Gemini CLI opens the NyayAssist sign-in page in your browser. You can also start sign-in yourself:

In Gemini CLI
/mcp auth nyayassist

Check the connection with /mcp list; NyayAssist should show as connected with its tools.

Update, remove or configure manually
Terminal
gemini extensions update nyayassist
gemini extensions uninstall nyayassist

To add NyayAssist without the extension, add this to ~/.gemini/settings.json:

~/.gemini/settings.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nyayassist": {
      "httpUrl": "https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Other Gemini apps that accept a remote MCP server address with OAuth can use the same address.

Cursor

On a computer with Cursor installed, use the one-click install link. Cursor shows the server details; confirm to install.

Then open Cursor Settings → MCP (or Tools & MCP). NyayAssist shows a Needs login or Connect button; select it and sign in on the NyayAssist page that opens. When connected, the server shows a green status and its tools.

Manual configuration

Add the server to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or .cursor/mcp.json (one project):

mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nyayassist": {
      "url": "https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

VS Code

NyayAssist works with MCP support in VS Code (agent mode in the Chat view). On a computer with VS Code installed, use the install link:

Start the server from the MCP: List Servers command. VS Code asks to sign in; allow it and sign in on the NyayAssist page that opens. Then open the Chat view in agent mode and check that the NyayAssist tools are enabled in the tools picker.

Command line and configuration file
Terminal
code --add-mcp '{"name":"nyayassist","type":"http","url":"https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp"}'

Or add the server to .vscode/mcp.json in a workspace, or to your user MCP configuration (Command Palette: MCP: Open User Configuration):

mcp.json
{
  "servers": {
    "nyayassist": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Any other MCP app

Any app that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP with OAuth sign-in can use NyayAssist. Add a remote server with the address below; there is no API key, client ID or secret to enter.

Server address: https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp

Most apps accept a block like this. Some call the address field serverUrl or httpUrl, or the type streamable-http; use what your app documents for a remote HTTP server.

Typical configuration
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nyayassist": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}
Apps that support only local servers

Use a local MCP bridge that supports OAuth, such as the open-source mcp-remote package. It is a third-party project and is not maintained by NyayAssist.

Bridge configuration
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nyayassist": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp"]
    }
  }
}

NyayAssist Enterprise#

NyayAssist Enterprise customers: your organisation receives its own setup instructions from your NyayAssist account team.

What you can do#

Legal Library
Search reported Indian judgments and central and state Acts, and fetch their details and summaries.
Research
Ask a legal question and get an answer citing Indian judgments and Acts, optionally grounded in one of your matters.
Drafting
Create a draft from instructions, optionally using a matter's facts, then revise it. Every revision is a new version.
Matters and documents
List and read your matters and their documents, create matters, and add or upload documents.
Translation and OCR
Translate a document into English or one of nine Indian languages, and make scanned documents searchable.
Due diligence
Create due-diligence projects, add documents and run reports.
Workflows
Run your NyayAssist workflows on a matter and follow their progress.
Meetings
Send a notetaker to a Google Meet or Microsoft Teams call, or process a recording into meeting notes.

Things to ask

List the documents in my matter 'Sharma v. State' and tell me the key dates in the charge sheet.

Draft a reply to a legal notice for non-payment of rent under a leave and licence agreement, using the facts in my matter 'Verma Tenancy'.

Translate the order I uploaded yesterday into Marathi.

Start a key-issues due-diligence report on the 'Acme Acquisition' project.

The full list of 44 tools is in the tools reference.

What it cannot do#

  • Delete, overwrite, share or send. No tool deletes anything, shares or invites, sends email, routes for e-signature, or changes billing or settings. Revising a draft always creates a new version.
  • Approve a workflow step. At a workflow review step the connector can only reject or cancel; approval is given in the NyayAssist web app.
  • Return full texts of judgments, Acts, transcripts or due-diligence reports. You get details and summaries; read the full text in the web app.
  • Give legal advice. Output is research and drafting support for a qualified advocate to verify.

The one tool that reaches outside NyayAssist on its own is start_meeting: it sends a NyayAssist notetaker into the Google Meet or Microsoft Teams call you give it. The notetaker joins as a visible participant and records, so use it only for calls you are entitled to record.

Plans and usage#

  • The connector is available on every NyayAssist plan at no extra charge. Your AI app may have its own plan requirements for custom connectors.
  • Tools that create work (research, drafts, translations, OCR, matters, uploads, due diligence, workflow runs and meetings) use the same allowances as the web app. Reading and listing your existing material does not.
  • Ask your assistant to check my NyayAssist plan and usage before a long piece of work. It runs get_my_plan_and_usage and shows what is left.
  • A feature that is not on your plan stays listed, and using it returns a clear message instead of a result.
  • Long work, such as research or a draft, may run as a job. Your assistant checks on it and fetches the result when it is ready. Asking for the same work again while it runs would use your allowance twice.

Plans and pricing: nyayassist.ai/pricing.

Privacy and security#

  • Your NyayAssist login, no API keys. You sign in on the NyayAssist sign-in page. Your AI app never sees your NyayAssist credentials.
  • Only your own data. The connector sees only what your account can see: your matters, documents, drafts, research and other work, plus the shared Legal Library.
  • Create, never delete. Nothing can be deleted, shared or sent through the connector.
  • Documents are data, not instructions. Text from judgments, Acts and your documents is clearly marked so the assistant does not follow instructions hidden inside it.
  • Your data stays in your NyayAssist account, handled under the NyayAssist Privacy Policy. Content returned to your AI app is also processed by that app's provider under its own terms.

Disconnect NyayAssist in your app at any time to end its access. Details: Security and privacy.

NyayAssist output is research and drafting support for a qualified advocate to verify. It is not legal advice and not a finished filing. Check every citation, section number and date against the source before relying on it.

Help and support#

Technical details#

For developers and IT teams. You do not need any of this to use the connector.

Connection details
TransportStreamable HTTP
Server URLhttps://mcp.nyayassist.ai/mcp
AuthenticationOAuth 2.1 authorisation code flow with PKCE
Client registrationAutomatic (dynamic client registration or a client ID metadata document); no client ID or secret to enter
API keyNone
OAuth discovery

The server publishes OAuth protected-resource metadata, from which a client discovers the NyayAssist authorisation server and the supported scopes:

  • https://mcp.nyayassist.ai/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp

An unauthenticated request to the server URL returns 401 Unauthorized with a WWW-Authenticate header pointing at this metadata. That is expected; the client then starts sign-in.

Scopes

The client requests the scopes it needs during sign-in. Each tool requires one of these scopes; account and job tools need only a valid sign-in.

Packages, skills and registry

The public packaging (client manifests, the Gemini CLI extension, Claude and Cursor plugin manifests and three skills) is published at github.com/NyayAssist/nyayassist-mcp. The server itself is run by NyayAssist and is not open source.

The skills teach the assistant how to sequence the tools well:

  • indian-legal-research: searching judgments and Acts, research questions and accurate citation.
  • case-review: reviewing a matter and reading its documents in page ranges.
  • drafting-assistant: creating, following and revising drafts.
